In Character Information I (Basic Info, Personality, Backstory)
Date: 2013-08-06 05:40 am (UTC)Name: Erk
Series: Fire Emblem
Canon Standing: Post-game; he has been promoted to Sage
Age: 15
Birthday & Astrology Sign: August 29th; Virgo
Arcana: The Hermit
Personality:
Erk's character note in his status screen is "charming, but uptight". Much of the insight into Erk's character that the game gives us centers around his own low self-esteem and his sense of duty and responsibility. He's very aware of the honor he's received in being accepted as apprentice to one of the most powerful (both magically and politically) mages on the continent, and is very committed to living up to that honor, placing it above all else - including, in certain circumstances, his own health. His supports with Louise and Nino reveal that shortly after being apprenticed to Pent he spent so much time working and studying to the exclusion even of food and rest that he ended up collapsing from exhaustion and having to be nursed back to health, and in his support with Pent he uses so much magic that he's in danger of death simply from overextending his own reserves. When corrected on these, though, he takes the lesson to heart - his support with Nino includes him discussing how Pent taught him about the importance of communing with spirits in anima magic.
Erk's study of magic consumes him, to the point that he turns down succeeding Pent as Etruria's Mage General in favor of studying in solitude and one of his endings even refers to his falling in love as an "unwelcome distraction" - though somehow he survives, even if it is with Serra. It's shown, however, that he can commit just as much to other goals - staying in the service of Eliwood and Hector long enough to defeat Nergal, or even working to gain the peerage that would give him enough standing to marry Priscilla (in her only actual happy ending). Erk seeks to master magic not for power or status, but for the sense of accomplishment and duty to himself and the chance he's been given.
In general, Erk is well-mannered, but he tends to be uptight, and is often sarcastic with people who irritate him or don't share his priorities, or just when he's aggravated by, say, a task he doesn't like but feels compelled by his own sense of responsibility to see through. Shows of emotion often make him feel uncomfortable, especially if they come from people he feels responsible toward; he's said he feels "paralyzed" by the caring and affection Pent and Louise show him as Pent's student, treating him almost as a surrogate child (this being before Pent and Louise's actual children have come along), and he berates himself after he upsets Nino by snapping at her when she interrupts his reading. He even shows signs of getting flustered when he manages to upset Serra, though most of the time they take each other's sniping in stride. His courtship with Priscilla, probably the most low-key of his supports, is generally quiet and reserved, showing affection through subtleties - the biggest gesture is Erk's commitment to staying with the army after his contract with her expires and continuing to guard her as part of his training, betraying a certain sly sense of humor after his nervous attempts to look after her earlier.

Date: 2013-08-06 05:42 am (UTC)Canon Powers:
Anima Magic Use, Rank S: (Mind-ish?) Erk has mastered the use of anima magic - the magic of nature, which attacks using elemental powers of fire, lightning, and wind. It is vaguely connected to compacts with nature spirits, though it's ambiguous in canon how tangible or sentient said spirits are, especially since it also seems to depend on resources in the mage's own body. He can't actually use it without an appropriate weapon, meaning a tome from which to cast. Most magic can be used in melee as well as at comparable ranges to a bow or a rifle (1-2 squares in Fire Emblem). Anima Magic on the Fire Emblem wikia; List of anima tomes in Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword on Serenes Forest
Staff Use, Rank C: (Mind) Erk has some small skill in the use of staves which can heal injuries or provide other helpful effects. Staves on the Fire Emblem wikia; List of staves in Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword on Serenes Forest
Canon Weapons|Items:
Elfire (Fire): A spell of moderate power that wreaths a target in an inferno. Probably roughly equivalent to Agilao.
Bolting (Lightning): A powerful spell that strikes a distant target with a massive lightning bolt. Probably roughly equivalent to Ziodyne. Bolting, unlike most of Erk's magic, is what FE veterans call a "siege tome" - it strikes at ranges more comparable to a ballista or other siege engine than to a hand weapon, in exchange for not actually allowing one to target enemies nearby. Anything Erk could hit with most magic, he is unlikely to be able to hit with Bolting. Bolting tomes also wear out very quickly and are extremely expensive to replace - this is a fresh one, but Erk only has five shots in it before he needs to, somehow, obtain more.
Fimbulvetr (Ice): A powerful spell that blasts a target with the force of a massive blizzard. Probably roughly equivalent to Bufudyne. (Fimbulvetr is theoretically a wind spell, but that's just because there's no such thing as an ice element in Fire Emblem. It's named after the three-year winter at the beginning of Ragnarok, it's a goddamn ice spell.)
Mend (Mind, Healing): A staff that heals an ally in melee range for a large amount of HP. Probably roughly equivalent to Diarama.
Restore (Mind, Healing): A staff that one ally of one status ailment. Equivalent to any of Patra, Re Patra, Posmudi, Mutudi, or Nervundi. (Because Fire Emblem has one status ailment that fits each category - Berserk, Stone, Poison, Silence, Sleep.)
Canon Allies:
Nothing here!
Canon Baggage:
- A large collection of books, mostly books on magical theory, but also scholarly works on other subjects.
- The weapons listed above (Elfire, Bolting, and Fimbulvetr are tomes, Mend and Restore are staves).
- Clothes appropriate to the quasi-medieval timeframe of Elibe. His day-to-day wear looks mostly like this, but on formal occasions he dresses more like this.
