Current Characters: Ssilissa
Character Information
Name: Erk
Canon: Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken (aka Blazing Sword, aka Fire Emblem 7, aka just plain Fire Emblem; IDK how we're going to list this canon)
Age: 15
Canon Point: After the events of the game
History: The plot of the game on the Fire Emblem wiki; Erk's page there - history is the first subsection; Erk's support conversations
Personality: All the characters in Fire Emblem tend to have a little note on their name in the status screen; Erk's is "charming, but uptight." He's withdrawn as a general habit, finding it difficult to express his emotions, especially around some of the other, more effusive characters - he's uncomfortable with Pent and Louise's affectionate caring, awkward around the enthusiastic young Nino, and outright aggravated by Serra's loud, bossy self-centeredness. Part of this seems to stem from his own low self-esteem - he's keenly aware of Pent's status both as a nobleman and as one of the foremost mages in a country known for them, and often sees himself as unworthy of the affection his teacher and his wife heap on him; as he himself says, such love scares him and makes him feel "paralyzed". He struggles to correct what he sees as his unworthiness, pushing himself to study and work hard even to the detriment of his own health. All the same, Erk takes great pride in his studies and his teacher both, and takes the lessons he learns to heart once he's done stammering over Pent and Louise taking care of him. Despite his reluctance, it's clear that he thinks of them as family; he's young enough that the three years he's spent studying under Pent is a significant portion of his life.
His seriousness and sense of responsibility keep him working at tasks even when he'd rather abandon them - such as, say, shepherding a rather annoying priestess halfway across the continent. His preferred coping method in such situations seems to be sarcasm; when he feels relaxed enough to let his sense of humor show, it's often rather biting. Oddly enough, he often seems less formal around his employers than Pent and Louise, but when the job involves acting as their guide and bodyguard on long journeys, it seems likely that it just takes him a long time to warm up to people and he has an easier time depending on how much authority he perceives them to have.
With his dutiful, serious nature backing it up, his studies tend to consume his life. Even apart from his tendency to engage his work to the point of damaging his health, he seldom seems to seek out much in the way of reward. His employment as a bodyguard is for the purposes of furthering his training rather than for the money, he refuses requests to succeed Pent as Etruria's Mage General, and even falling in love becomes an "unwelcome distraction". When it does happen, though, he devotes himself to it just as much as his studies - passing on Pent's teachings to Nino or immediately picking up his duty of escorting Priscilla even without a contract. And, well… he does still hang around Serra despite being herself.
Erk tends to prefer to be guided by logic rather than emotion. As stated, displays of emotion toward him tend to make him uncomfortable, and when his own emotions get the better of him they tend to result in making the situation even more awkward simply because he has difficulty handling them. Still, despite what Serra might say about his "dark and secretive personality", Erk tries not to be a cold person, and he tends to feel bad when he manages to upset someone (most of his support conversations with Nino consist of him trying to make up for snapping at her in the first one). He has no problem when Serra takes his sniping in stride, but gets flustered when he actually manages to upset her. He tends to try to be polite, even if he comes off as brusque, and while his formality tends to relax the more comfortable he is around a person, he's still generally well-mannered.
Camp Information
Parent: Athena. While Erk's study of magic is his consuming passion, it's just that - the study of magic, as an art and a craft, rather than simply magic as a force. His focus isn't on the power it can bring or, necessarily, the effects it has, but on the knowledge that being a mage requires (and he's rather taken aback when Nino proves to be a massively talented mage based almost entirely on instinct). This focus on the craft and knowledge of magic, combined with his logic-over-emotion personality, makes him a key fit for Athena over a parent more focused on magic itself. Better yet, displaying not only intelligence but also wisdom, he has come to realize that while the study of magic is his passion, true mastery of his craft isn't found only in books; connecting with the natural world his anima magic is drawn from is just as important.
Skills: Art/crafting skill (Erk's main craft is magic, but surely he can find more that he can do), strategy (Erk is a skilled combatant with magic, but is likely to prefer thinking things through to picking up a weapon), divine wisdom
Appearance: Unchanged. Erk's perfectly human.
Samples
First Person/Journal Sample:
Can I ask whoever it is playing music so loudly to stop, please? Some of us are trying to study. [Erk hasn't quite accepted that this is a hazard of being one number along from the Apollo cabin.] I'm not a natural with physical weapons like some people in the camp and I'm never going to get there if I don't know what I'm doing.
Though I'm beginning to think what I need to do is find someone I can go through these wargames with. I didn't have much training as a tactician in my own world - though I did know a superb one. Just solving problems is nice for classic scenarios, but it isn't always the best preparation for a real battle. Would anyone else be willing to give it a try? The rules are fairly simple, really; it shouldn't teach long to teach. There are a few subtleties, but they're not hard to pick up as you go along.
Third Person/Log Sample:
"Thank you, my lady Iris." Erk set down the pendant and turned back to the problem he'd laid out with the pieces on the board in front of him. It was all laid out on little squares of paper - he couldn't find a set similar to the games he was familiar with, so he'd improvised. Little symbols marked the type of weapon each paper warrior fought with, whether they wore heavy armor, whether they were mounted on horses or even flying creatures. He pushed a swordsman forward, then frowned and pulled him back, seeing he'd left him within throwing range of someone with a javelin. That would never do.
He'd gotten a snack, having missed lunch, but it was sitting beside him, untouched - he was far too focused on this problem. Perhaps he'd remember to eat once he'd solved the puzzle he'd set himself, or perhaps somebody would have to come along and poke it into him. He frowned and looked up as the music intruded on his thoughts again; it wasn't just the fact that it was loud, it was also irritatingly catchy. It was going to be stuck in his head for ages. Damn magic music. If it wasn't the Apollo kids in the next cabin it was the satyrs and nymphs out in the forest… which he supposed he should visit someday, but right now he had things he was trying to get done. Communing with nature spirits could wait for later; he had to solve this and then go training with an actual weapon - without magic, he'd have to learn how to use more normal ones. A javelin seemed to him like the best option, though if what they said about these monsters was right he was going to have to deal with creatures that fought in ways he'd never seen before. This whole situation was going to take a lot of adjusting to.
